Performing a Mold Inspection on Your Home

If you suspect you have a mold problem in your home, you can conduct an inspection to find your answer. You can choose to do the inspection yourself, or you can hire a professional mold inspection company to do it for you. Just remember that some molds are easily spotted while others are invisible to the human eye.

You can inspect your home for mold and back it up with a home mold testing kit. Collect samples and send them away in the kit for analyzing. These kits are usually easy to find at home improvement stores or hardware stores and are easy to use.

If you choose to do your own test for mold, there are various types of kits. Some kits need transparent tape that you cut into 3 long pieces one at a time. Put the tape where you see visible signs of mold growing. These locations can be on the walls, ceilings, floors, attics and crawl spaces. Peel the tape away and attach to the inner part of a small plastic zip lock bag. These samples are then submitted to a laboratory to be analyzed.

You can also get kits that just have to put in the room where you suspect mold. These kits are made up of a sticky strip and a dish. Set the kit in the center of the room with the sticky side facing up. Let the air in the room settle on the open dish for one hour, then close and tape it shut. Note the location of the test on top of the kit. Submit the samples to a laboratory for analysis.

A mold inspection can be performed by simply smelling your house. With a strong flashlight, you can search all areas of your house for signs of mold growing on the walls, floors, ceiling, attic, basement and any other areas. Pay extra attention to any damp and dark areas. Write down what you find and decide if your house needs mold removal.

If you suspect there are mold spores in your home, the air can be tested. This type of test is usually best conducted by a professional, although you can get a home testing kit to do it yourself. Be sure to follow the instructions carefully if you do it on your own. What you’re doing is comparing the air inside your home and outside of it. Open two airtight containers and leave one in the house and one outside. Be sure to mark them correctly. Close the lids after an hour and send them off to have the molds identified.

It doesn’t have to be difficult to conduct a mold inspection. You can perform your own inspection pretty easily. However, it may be better to call in the mold professionals and leave it to them.
